DOCTORS AND PATIENTS NEED HELP NOW!

We Need More N95 Masks and Ventilators Now!

1. Mobilize the full resources of the federal government to guarantee adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for all healthcare workers on the front line, including by using the powers of the Defense Production Act (DPA) to direct the production and distribution of PPE, including N95 masks, and ventilators.

2. Reallocate the existing supplies that exist in stockpiles so that those geographical areas hardest hit by the pandemic are prioritized.

3. Reinstate the longstanding Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines that governed the correct use of PPE when treating suspected and positive infectious disease cases such as COVID-19 patients to reflect clinical fact rather than availability of supplies. This is necessary to ensure healthcare workers, who are falling ill at alarming rates, are  protected from contracting and spreading the virus.

4. Drastically increase the availability of COVID-19 testing, including allowing healthcare workers to be tested if they believe they have been exposed to COVID-19 or are experiencing symptoms.

As a doctors’ union of members who are practicing on the front lines, Doctors Council SEIU thanks all doctors for putting yourselves out there in the epicenter of this pandemic for our patients and communities and the heroic work you are doing.

As doctors, we also acknowledge the invaluable members of the patient care team such as residents, nurses, PAs, NPs, techs, pharmacists, maintenance and so many more.

COVID-19 is a pandemic that will test the limits of our already strained healthcare system. Our priority remains ensuring that our members have the tools, equipment, training, protocols and information needed to help keep themselves, their patients, and their communities safe.

Doctors deserve this.  Our Patients deserve it.  And all New Yorkers deserve it.
